The 12th issue of Neuwerk Magazine for Design Studies critically explores the notion of intervention through design. While the intervention has long been associated with emancipatory approaches to design and with politically and socially engaged aesthetic practices, the concept seems to call for critical reconsideration: Who actually asked for the intervention? And what happens to what remains?

Featuring prominent positions such as the Kiosk of Solidarity or perspectives from design anthropology at the University of California, the magazine paints a broad picture of designerly intervention—bringing practical approaches into dialogue with critical reflections.

The selected contributions examine how design interventions can render power relations visible, transform relationships and generate new forms of knowledge. Yet, when lacking critical self-reflection, they also risk operating extractively and reproducing classist structures. Intervention is thus no longer understood solely as a heroic act, but rather as a relational and politically sensitive process.

All content is made freely available through the publication’s hybrid publishing website.





To make the content accessible across print and digital formats, the project involved not only the design of a publication and a website, but also the integration of both formats. Through the website, readers can create their own selection of contributions and compile them into a personalised issue, allowing the publication to also be published collectively and on demand. This approach served not only to make the content openly accessible, but also as a study and pilot project for a more comprehensive publishing platform.
