Magazine for Design Studies
Designerly Research
Editorial Design Lead
15,4×23 cm
To explore this question, a conference was organised first, with its proceedings subsequently published in the eleventh issue of Neuwerk. Having already been part of the conference team, involved not only in developing its visual identity, I was asked to lead the editorial design of the resulting publication.
The core idea was to play with the conventions of academic aesthetics in publishing through the use of Times New Arial—a variable typeface that interpolates between Times New Roman and Arial. Throughout the publication, this interpolation is explored in different ways, introducing a sense of visual playfulness into an otherwise deliberately sober, academic design—reflecting the publication’s focus on designerly research.
To keep production costs low and make a larger print run possible (which still sold out), most of the publication was produced in black-and-white offset printing. The images were gathered in a separate full-colour section at the centre of the magazine, marked by a change in paper stock. A printed vertical “progress bar” running along the fore edge of the book locates readers within the publication’s chapters while also making the full-colour image section continuously visible from the book block, turning it into a physical index that can be seen and accessed directly.
