This study examines the authority of state-sponsored design awards. It finds that their interpretive dominance is not derived solely from the justification of individual acknowledgments. Equally important seems to be the production of a discursive framework within which particular conceptions of “good” design can become thinkable, assessable and legitimate.
The focus, therefore, extends beyond evaluative criteria to the conditions that make evaluation possible—the very production of evaluability itself. This is done by examining the discourse on “good” design over 13 years of design promotion in the German states of Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt with qualitative research methods.
